It’s no mystery that every rhino species is under threat of extinction. Black Market medicinal trade in Rhino horn has inflated the rhino’s value higher than gold at over $65,000 a pound. With the promise of so much money poachers are becoming more sophisticated and more deadly. Until wisdom prevails and people stop buying black market rhino horn for its baseless medicinal value the only recourse available to protect rhinos is to fund and support the anti-poaching units. I was approached by Jim Haigwood of the LA Zoo (whom I’ve gotten to know over the years drawing and sculpting at the zoo) to draw a fun t-shirt design celebrating the major species of rhinos for their annual Bowling For Rhinos Fundraiser. Since the event is in May they call it “Cinco de Rhino,” and the five species of Rhino are represented in a caricatured mariachi band: The Black Rhino, White Rhino, Indian Rhino, Javan Rhino and Sumatran Rhino. I believe the T-shirts will be available at the event and maybe elsewhere all proceeds go specifically to the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy.
I finally figured out how to shoot time lapse footage of the stars! While in Zions National Park with my family I shot this footage of the brilliant stars of the milky way rotating around the rugged red rocks of southern Utah.
I’ve had the great pleasure to work on The Rise of the Guardians for almost two years now. We’re still finishing the film which comes out this fall but DreamWorks just released a teaser trailer. This is the best teaser made for a DreamWorks movie, it encapsulates in moments the premise, stakes and hook of the film. I know there isn’t always truth in advertising but in this instance the trailer respectfully represents the movie in story and tone.
Hummingbirds are amazing birds unique to North and South America. We are lucky, where we live the tiny avians remain year around. Most of them are Anna’s Hummingbirds but in the summer we also get Rufus Humming birds. We do all we can to entice them to visit our garden; planting flowers preferred by hummers and always keeping the feeder stocked. My kids and I recently found a special treat; a humming bird nest. Moments in nature are always great but to share one with your kids is special.
